The iPhone Kids

My kids used to love to read.

They still do, but they spend more and more time playing with electronica. Phones. Computers. The XBox.

It’s a mixed blessing. It’s social (of a sort, not as good as real life but not totally isolated, either). But it doesn’t stimulate their minds the way good writing does – heck, even the way mediocre writing does.

Is our job as authors to compete with electronica? Complement it? Or coexist with it in an uneasy alliance where neither party acknowledges the other but keeps a watchful eye out anyway?

I guess I’m in the coexistence camp, but not firmly so.

As long as we’re on the C’s, how about confused? Yeah, that’s it.

Will their kids read books?
